Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Japan, Mohammad Daud Ali, will not be in Tokyo during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to Japan from October 26 to 29, as the government has decided to keep him in Dhaka.
Mohammad Nazrul Islam, secretary for bilateral affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been sent to Tokyo to oversee diplomatic matters and coordinate arrangements for the visit.
A senior government source confirmed the development to the media on Thursday (October 22).
Diplomatic sources in Dhaka and Tokyo said Nazrul Islam arrived in Japan on Wednesday and will take the lead in bilateral coordination and diplomatic support during the visit.
Daud Ali was summoned to Dhaka through a Foreign Ministry letter dated October 15 for discussions about the visit. He returned from Japan within the two-day deadline, but several senior ministry officials said he had not been involved in the preparatory work for the trip.
According to the schedule, Tarique Rahman is due to hold bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on October 27. Discussions are expected to cover trade, investment, infrastructure development and the implementation of the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).
Both Daud Ali and Nazrul Islam belong to the 15th Bangladesh Civil Service foreign affairs cadre. Before becoming ambassador to Japan, Daud Ali served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to Romania. He is scheduled to begin post-retirement leave on December 7 this year.
