The Chhatra-Janatar Sangram Parishad has called a half-day blockade of roads and waterways in Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts on Saturday, October 24, protesting alleged attacks on blockade supporters, police baton charges and vandalism of homes and shops in Sajek, Rangamati.
The organisation announced the programme in a statement sent to the media on Thursday afternoon.
According to the statement, the blockade is intended to protest the alleged attacks and vandalism during a peaceful road blockade in Sajek demanding the removal of armed members of the Santosh Group of the Parbatya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS).
It also aims to express solidarity with the legitimate demands of Sajek residents.
Ushaton Chakma, president of the organisation, said the blockade would run from 5am to noon on Saturday, affecting road and waterway transport in both districts.
He called on all democratic and progressive organisations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, as well as transport owners’ and workers’ associations in Rangamati and Khagrachhari, to support the programme.
However, ambulances and vehicles carrying patients, hearses, fire service vehicles, vehicles transporting emergency medicines and vehicles carrying journalists will remain exempt from the blockade.
