The government has reconstituted the three district councils in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT)—Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban.
The Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs issued a gazette notification on Thursday (August 20) announcing the formation of interim councils for the three districts.
The councils were reconstituted under the powers granted by the Hill District Council Act, 1989, Section 16Ka(4) of the three Hill District Council (Amendment) Act, 1997, and Sections 4(2) and 2(2) of the three Hill District Council (Amendment) Act, 2014.
Under the new arrangements, Dipan Talukdar has been appointed chairman of the Rangamati Hill District Council, Mrasa Thowai Marma chairman of the Khagrachhari Hill District Council, and Mamyaching chairman of the Bandarban Hill District Council.
Each council will have 14 members in addition to the chairman.
The interim councils will perform their respective responsibilities in accordance with existing laws and regulations until further orders, according to the notification.
The notification also cancelled the previous councils formed through a gazette issued on November 7, 2024.
The order took effect immediately.
