RANGPUR: Two unidentified men were killed in a mob beating over allegations of attempting to steal a battery-powered auto-rickshaw in Gangachara upazila of Rangpur.
The incident took place early Sunday (October 25) in the canal area of Pukur Khurir Dola in Bagpur Bagerhat village under Barabil Union.
According to police and local sources, the two men allegedly attempted to steal a battery-powered auto-rickshaw from the house of Sohel Mia, son of Abdul Matin Member, in Bagpur Bagerhat village early in the morning.
The owner noticed the incident and began shouting. Hearing the commotion, the imam of a nearby mosque announced “thieves, thieves” over the mosque’s loudspeaker.
Muslims arriving for Fajr prayers and local residents then chased the two men along with the auto-rickshaw. At one point, the men abandoned the vehicle and tried to flee. They were caught in the Pukur Khurir Dola canal in the North Panapukur area, about half a kilometre west of Sohel Mia’s house.
Local residents then beat them, leaving both dead at the scene.
Police rushed to the spot after receiving the news, conducted preliminary examinations of the bodies and began necessary legal procedures before bringing the situation under control. The identities of the deceased could not immediately be established.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) crime scene teams have been informed of the incident.
