DHAKA: Bangladesh Bank’s (BB) website has resumed operations after being temporarily shut down due to urgent security concerns. The website has been accessible since 8am on Sunday (October 25), allowing users to access necessary information and services.

Users had faced difficulties accessing the website at various times over the past three days, raising concerns among banking sector stakeholders. The possibility of cybersecurity risks also sparked discussions about the security of the central bank’s website.

Earlier, Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and Executive Director Arif Hossain Khan confirmed that the website had been shut down due to an urgent security issue. However, details about the nature of the problem, whether it was linked to a cyberattack, and whether any data had been stolen remain unconfirmed.

The Bangladesh Bank website is a key source of information on the country’s banking and financial sectors. It publishes circulars, notifications, monetary policy statements, foreign exchange reserve figures, remittance data and banking statistics.

Bank and financial institution officials, researchers, journalists, businesspeople and members of the public regularly use the website for various purposes.

As a result, even a temporary disruption can affect information access and routine activities across the sector.

Experts say the growing use of digital services in the financial sector has made cybersecurity increasingly important. They stress the need to strengthen security measures for the websites, databases and digital infrastructure of central banks and financial institutions.
