A court in Meherpur has sentenced a 52-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping a Class IX student.
The court also fined the convict, Mosharraf Hossain, Tk2 lakh, with an additional one year in prison if he fails to pay the fine.
Judge Md Tajul Islam of the Meherpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Sunday (October 25). State prosecutor Mostafizur Rahman Tuhin confirmed the judgment.
Mosharraf, son of Nur Mohammad, is a resident of Govipur village in Meherpur Sadar upazila.
According to the case documents, the incident took place around noon on April 8, 2025, when the victim’s mother, sister and grandmother left home to deposit money at a bank in Meherpur municipal town. The ninth-grade student was alone at home at the time.
Taking advantage of the situation, their neighbour Mosharraf entered the house and raped the girl, according to the case details.
When the girl’s mother returned home, the student told her about the incident. Two days later, on April 10, her mother filed a rape case against Mosharraf with Meherpur Sadar Police Station.
Sub-Inspector Mahatab Uddin of the police station submitted a charge sheet against Mosharraf on November 30, 2025, following the investigation.
During the trial, the court recorded testimony from 12 witnesses. After finding the rape charge proven, the court sentenced Mosharraf to life imprisonment and imposed the fine.
Mostafizur Rahman represented the prosecution, while Mizan Ali and Mahatab Hossain represented the defence.
