Authorities have recovered 1,482 grams of gold bangles from a passenger’s hand luggage and clothing at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram.

The gold was seized on Sunday (October 25) from Md Sharif, who arrived on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-136, following a search by airport intelligence agencies and customs officials.

Sharif, a resident of Senbagh upazila in Noakhali, was travelling as a member of the Manik Travels and Tours Hajj group.

According to airport authorities, officials noticed his suspicious movements near baggage belt No. 1 in the arrival hall and conducted a search. The gold bangles were subsequently recovered from his hand luggage and clothing under the supervision of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI), other intelligence agencies and airport customs.

Chattogram airport Public Relations Officer Engineer Ibrahim Khalil said the estimated revenue payable on the recovered gold amounted to Tk 2.84 crore.

After the quantity was determined, the gold was handed over to airport customs. Proceedings are underway to file a case against the detained passenger under anti-smuggling laws, he added.
