Customs intelligence officials have seized 733 grams of gold and an iPhone 18 Pro Max, with a combined value of Tk1.39 crore including duties and taxes, at airports in Dhaka and Chattogram.
According to a press release issued by the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) on Tuesday, 299 grams of gold jewellery and the smartphone, valued at Tk61.29 lakh, were seized from Fatema Tuz Zohra, who arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport from Kuala Lumpur on a US-Bangla Airlines flight on Monday.
At Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram, officials seized 434 grams of gold worth Tk78.12 lakh from two passengers arriving from Dubai on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-148.
During a body search, officials found gold jewellery concealed in Tanvir Hasan Rifat’s shoes, along with a gold bar. They also recovered a gold bar and jewellery from another passenger, Md Habibur Rahman.
CIID said passport records showed that Habibur had previously brought gold into Bangladesh under baggage benefits earlier this year.
In a separate operation, officials seized another 902 grams of gold from passengers at Chattogram airport over the preceding week, including 702 grams of gold bars and 200 grams of jewellery.
CIID said it would continue intelligence-led surveillance and targeted inspections to prevent smuggling and protect government revenue.
