US forces deployed in the Middle East are prepared to launch a major military operation against Iran within 96 hours of receiving an order from President Donald Trump, CNN reported, citing US military officials.
According to the report, the United States has already deployed the military assets required for a potential operation in the Middle East. If a new attack takes place, it may not be limited to Iranian radar systems, missile launch sites and military installations. Potential targets could also include the country’s energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities.
“This would be a major operation,” a US official told CNN.
Several current and former US officials believe the key question is not whether Trump will authorise military action, but when he will issue the order. They suggested that the operation could begin before the end of this year, although the likelihood may be higher after the US midterm elections.
Concerns Over Iranian Retaliation
US officials say Iran’s military now has a better understanding of American military tactics, potentially making it more difficult for US forces to completely destroy their intended targets.
Despite this challenge, US Central Command and the Pentagon are preparing an extensive list of potential targets.
Trump has not yet made a final decision, but officials familiar with the matter believe he is leaning towards major military action. However, he has previously appeared to support certain measures before backing away at the last minute.
Meanwhile, recent US intelligence assessments suggest that Iran and Yemen’s Houthi rebels could retaliate if the United States and Israel launch fresh attacks.
The potential retaliation could target US troops and military installations across the Middle East, as well as American interests in other regions.
