Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly condemned and expressed concern over a cocktail bomb attack in front of the printing press of daily Amar Desh that left two people injured.

In a statement issued on Monday (October 26), the party’s Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar denounced the attack, which took place around 11:00pm on Sunday (October 25).

Describing the incident as highly condemnable and alarming, Golam Parwar said the attack on an important facility such as a newspaper printing press posed a threat to independent journalism, media security and the country’s law and order situation.

He expressed sympathy for the injured, identified as press security guard Akhtar Hossain and Rina Khanam, a woman who runs a betel leaf shop in front of the press, and wished them a speedy recovery.

Golam Parwar said the media was an important pillar of the state and society, adding that any attempt to undermine an environment conducive to independent journalism through intimidation, attacks or violence was contrary to democratic values.

He said such incidents could not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The Jamaat leader urged the law enforcement agencies concerned to conduct a fair and impartial investigation, swiftly identify those involved in the attack and bring them to justice.

He also called for effective measures to ensure the security of Amar Desh’s printing press and all media establishments across the country.
