Police have arrested 18 more people in connection with an attack on police officers and vandalism of a police vehicle in Gopalganj, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to 25.

Seven people were arrested earlier and sent to jail, police said.

A case was filed on Sunday by Md Phulmia, a sub-inspector of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, naming 100 people as accused. Of them, 40 were identified by name, while 60 others were listed as unidentified suspects.

Additional Superintendent of Police in Gopalganj Kazi Humayun Rashid confirmed the latest arrests.

He said leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League and Jubo League staged a sudden procession on Saturday, chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans in support of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

When a police patrol encountered the procession at Burimar Gachtala in Raghunathpur, Gopalganj Sadar upazila, the processionists attacked the officers with sticks and locally made weapons, he added.

The attackers also vandalised a police pickup van, leaving two police personnel, including Sub-Inspector Phulmia, injured.

Police are trying to arrest others involved in the incident, the officer said.
