GUANGZHOU: Chinese police have detained five Bangladeshis, including a woman, over alleged violations of entry rules at the Canton Fair in Guangzhou. Five Chinese nationals were also detained in connection with the same incident.

The detained Bangladeshis are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, October 27.

According to the allegations, the Bangladeshis paid money to arrange entry to the fair for five Chinese nationals by presenting them as their assistants. Police officers in plain clothes detained the group over the alleged irregularities.

The Canton Fair is one of China’s largest international trade exhibitions. Businesspeople and visitors must meet specific requirements and comply with the fair’s entry regulations to gain access.

The detainees allegedly violated these rules while arranging entry for others in exchange for money. However, details of the specific legal charges against them were not immediately available. Any punishment will depend on the outcome of the legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, people involved in Bangladesh’s travel agency sector have alleged that some unscrupulous agencies encourage clients to take risky or irregular routes for financial gain. Such arrangements can expose travellers to legal complications abroad, they warned.

Bangladeshi businesspeople planning to attend future editions of the Canton Fair have been advised to obtain valid invitation letters, ensure they have the required entry authorisation and comply with the exhibition’s rules.

Industry insiders have also urged prospective visitors not to resort to irregular arrangements in an attempt to save money or earn extra income.

Violations of foreign laws can cause personal and financial losses and potentially damage Bangladesh’s reputation, they said, stressing the importance of complying with the laws and regulations of destination countries while travelling or conducting business abroad.
