The body of a 23-year-old university student who drowned while swimming with friends in the Jamuna River in Sirajganj was recovered on Monday morning, a day after he went missing.
The body of Shahriar Nur Hossain Jisan was found near the Enayetpur Spur Dam ghat in Chauhali upazila around 9am, as a five-member diving team from Rajshahi resumed its search operation.
Police and Fire Service personnel, with help from local residents, recovered the body after it surfaced near the spot where he had disappeared.
Jisan was a first-year student in the Tourism and Hotel Management Department at the National University’s Gazipur campus. He was the son of Ali Akbar and hailed from Haji Rafique Road in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj.
Enayetpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahid Hossain said Jisan visited the Enayetpur Spur Dam area on Sunday with five friends, including Jahid Hasan Anchol, a resident of Sirajganj town.
Around 2:30pm, Jisan and three other friends entered the river to swim, while Anchol remained on the bank. Jisan suddenly went under the water and did not resurface. His friends failed to rescue him.
A five-member diving team from Rajshahi launched a search operation later that evening. The search continued until around 9:30pm before being suspended for the night.
The team resumed the operation on Monday morning, when Jisan’s body surfaced nearby and was recovered with the assistance of police, firefighters and local residents.
After completing the necessary formalities, police and Fire Service personnel handed over the body to his family.
