DHAKA: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has found suspicious transactions worth more than Tk 1,045 crore in 40 bank accounts belonging to Rezaul Alam Shaheen, brother-in-law of former Special Branch (SB) chief Monirul Islam.
The anti-graft body has also found assets worth Tk 23.32 crore allegedly beyond Shaheen’s known sources of income and decided to file a case against Monirul Islam, his wife Sayla Farzana and Shaheen.
The ACC disclosed the findings in a press release on Monday.
According to the commission’s inquiry, Shaheen allegedly attempted to legalise money obtained through bribery, corruption and abuse of power by his sister Sayla Farzana and her husband Monirul Islam.
He allegedly acquired substantial assets in his own name and conducted unusual transactions through multiple bank accounts to conceal the source of the money.
The ACC found that Tk 527.92 crore was deposited into Shaheen’s 40 bank accounts between 8 December 2013 and 16 April 2024. During the same period, Tk 517.35 crore was withdrawn from those accounts.
The total transactions, combining deposits and withdrawals, amounted to Tk 1,045.28 crore, according to the commission.
The inquiry also identified Tk 23.32 crore in assets allegedly inconsistent with Shaheen’s known sources of income. The ACC said the preliminary findings had established grounds for filing a case over the alleged acquisition of illicit assets and suspicious financial transactions.
The other two proposed accused in the case are former Additional Inspector General of Police Monirul Islam and his wife, Sayla Farzana, a former additional secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration.
In a separate inquiry, the ACC found evidence of alleged illicit assets and suspicious bank transactions involving Shaheen’s wife, Sanjida Khanam Tumpa.
According to the commission, Tumpa owns assets worth Tk 15.97 crore, while her declared legitimate sources of income amount to Tk67.18 lakh. The ACC has therefore alleged that she acquired Tk15.30 crore in assets beyond her known sources of income.
The inquiry found that Tk33.10 crore was deposited into 27 bank accounts in her name between 8 December 2013 and 4 February 2024. Withdrawals during the period exceeded Tk 25.51 crore, bringing the total transactions to approximately Tk 58.62 crore.
The ACC alleges that Tumpa attempted to legalise money obtained through bribery and corruption by her husband, Shaheen, her sister-in-law Sayla Farzana and Monirul Islam.
The commission has decided to file a separate case against Tumpa, Monirul Islam, Sayla Farzana and Shaheen over the alleged illicit assets and financial transactions.
The ACC said the proposed cases would be brought under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004; Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947; Sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012; and Section 109 of the Penal Code.
ACC Deputy Director Mozammil Hossain and Assistant Deputy Director Sanjida Akter conducted the inquiries into the allegations.
