Police Headquarters has clarified remarks made by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir regarding “crossfire”, saying he used the term to emphasise strict law enforcement, not to suggest extrajudicial killings or punishment outside the judicial process.

In a press release issued on Monday (October 26), Police Headquarters said the IGP had reaffirmed the police’s commitment to taking effective action against drug traffickers, terrorists, extortionists and other criminals posing threats to public safety.

The clarification came after media reports and headlines sparked public confusion over his remarks at the inauguration of Community Bank’s Chawkbazar Islamic Banking Branch in Dhaka earlier in the day.

At the event, the IGP said the police would take whatever measures were necessary under the law and Constitution, adding that they would carry out crossfire operations if necessary and authorised by the government.

Police Headquarters said maintaining law and order, arresting criminals and protecting public safety were fundamental responsibilities of the police.

Officers sometimes face direct attacks from criminals and organised groups while performing their duties.

According to the press release, police faced 176 attacks during the first 10 months of 2026, leaving four members dead and 370 seriously injured.

It also referred to provisions concerning the police’s right to self-defence under existing laws, including the Penal Code 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 and the Police Act 1861.

Police Headquarters further clarified the IGP’s remarks about journalists, saying he had not intended to make sweeping comments about them and that his remarks were inadvertent.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting human rights, safeguarding lives and property, and upholding the rule of law with professionalism and impartiality.
