The National Citizen Party (NCP) has demanded the immediate removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir over his controversial remarks that police would carry out “crossfire” operations if the government permitted them.

In a statement issued on Monday night, the party strongly condemned the police chief’s comments, describing them as contrary to the rule of law and the Constitution and a dangerous attempt to legitimise human rights violations and extrajudicial killings.

The NCP said no government approval could legitimise extrajudicial killings.

It also accused the government of contradicting its own commitment to ending enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, as outlined in the BNP’s 31-point state reform plan.

The party warned that such remarks from the country’s police chief could encourage unlawful use of force by police officers and open the door to further human rights abuses.

The NCP also called for the immediate formation of a police commission, as outlined in the July Charter, to free the police force from unlawful practices and establish it as a public-friendly and accountable institution.

The controversy erupted after the IGP said at an event in Old Dhaka on Monday that police would act in accordance with the law and Constitution and would carry out “crossfire” operations if necessary and permitted by the government.

Police Headquarters later clarified that the IGP had used the term “crossfire” figuratively to emphasise strict law enforcement.
