Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the authorities concerned to strengthen preparedness for potential earthquakes, identify vulnerable buildings and enhance emergency rescue capabilities.

He gave the directives at a meeting on earthquake preparedness and response at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday (November 2).

According to Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplur, the prime minister stressed the need for a coordinated action plan to ensure public safety in earthquake-prone areas, particularly Dhaka.

He emphasised identifying vulnerable and old buildings, ensuring compliance with the National Building Code in construction and strengthening the capacity for rapid rescue operations during emergencies.

Tarique Rahman said effective coordination among all relevant ministries, local government bodies, the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), Fire Service and other emergency service agencies was crucial to minimising casualties and damage from natural disasters such as earthquakes.

He also stressed ensuring the safety of critical infrastructure, including hospitals and educational institutions, maintaining adequate rescue equipment, training rescue personnel and raising public awareness about earthquakes.

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Rajuk Chairman Engineer Riazul Islam Riju and senior officials from relevant ministries and agencies attended the meeting.
