Cumilla: Religious Affairs Minister and Cumilla-3 (Muradnagar) lawmaker Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad has said the Awami League exploited the Liberation War for political gain, while another party is now doing business with the spirit of the July uprising.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a programme distributing financial assistance from his personal funds among freedom fighters and members of families of martyred freedom fighters at the Muradnagar Upazila Parishad Complex in Cumilla on Monday (November 2).
The minister said, “The Awami League did business with the Liberation War, while another party is doing business with the spirit of July. We do not want to do business with either.”
Referring to BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, he said, “Tarique Rahman has clearly stated that everyone must be given their due respect. We must move forward based on the spirit of July. At the same time, those who took part in the great Liberation War must also be accorded proper respect. The founder of the BNP was a freedom fighter, and our prime minister is also the son of a freedom fighter.”
Referring to his medical treatment, the minister said he and his family were grateful to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for granting him an extended leave to receive treatment.
Praising the prime minister, Kaikobad said Tarique Rahman worked tirelessly for the country. Recalling an interaction with him after office hours, the minister said he had found the prime minister extremely tired, although there was no sign of fatigue in his words or behaviour.
“He always thinks about the helpless and poor people of Bangladesh,” the minister said.
He said the prime minister’s concern for disadvantaged people was reflected in initiatives such as the introduction of farmer cards and family cards, as well as allowances for imams, muezzins and other religious leaders.
The minister also sought prayers for Tarique Rahman, saying, “May Allah protect him from all kinds of conspiracies.”
The programme was organised by the Muradnagar Upazila administration and chaired by Shakib Hasan Khan, assistant commissioner (land) and acting upazila nirbahi officer.
Assistant teacher Sharmin Fatema conducted the event.
Among others, Assistant Superintendent of Police AKM Kamruzzaman of the Muradnagar, Bangra Bazar and Titas circles; Upazila Secondary Education Officer Shafiul Alam Talukdar; Upazila Agriculture Officer Pavel Khan Pappu; Social Services Officer Barun Chandra De; and Muradnagar Upazila BNP Convener Mohiuddin Anjan and Member Secretary Molla Mujibul Haque spoke at the programme.
Officials from different departments of the upazila administration, BNP and its affiliated organisations, freedom fighters and people from various walks of life were also present.
