PABNA: National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has described the ongoing workers’ movement as justified, blaming the government’s lack of proper planning and effective initiatives for the situation. He said the government cannot evade responsibility by branding legitimate movements as conspiracies and called on people to take to the streets to protect public interests.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at a briefing ahead of a discussion meeting at the Pabna Shilpakala Academy auditorium on Tuesday (November 3). The meeting, organised by the NCP’s Pabna district unit, focused on reviewing organisational progress and planning for the upcoming local government elections.
Nahid Islam said if fascist elements infiltrate the workers’ movement and attempt to create anarchy, the government must also bear responsibility. He described this as a failure of the government’s intelligence activities.
He alleged that the government was using intelligence agencies to suppress the opposition. However, he said, the government had yet to disclose any intelligence information about those who had killed people and fled to India.
The NCP convener further said the interim government had dealt with nearly 500 movements. Protests could only be brought to an end if the government enjoyed public confidence, but people had no trust in the current government, he claimed.
He alleged that the government had betrayed the mandate of 70 per cent of the people and broken its pre-election promises and commitments made in its election manifesto.
Criticising the latest hike in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices, Nahid Islam said cylinder gas prices had been increased again on Monday. A cylinder that previously cost Tk 1,800 in the open market was being sold for Tk 2,500, and prices might rise further, he warned.
“Everyone must take to the streets to protect the interests of the people. This government must be held accountable on the streets,” he said.
