Police have recovered 20 crude bombs, 41 torch sticks and two litres of kerosene from a roadside area in Mirpur, Dhaka, amid fears of possible sabotage.

The bombs were later detonated in a controlled manner to ensure public safety, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said.

Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Mirpur Division Hasan Mohammad Nasher Rikabdar confirmed the development on Thursday (November 5).

He said Sub-Inspector Md Imran Hossain received confidential information at around 12:10am on Thursday about bomb-like objects and torch sticks lying on the road in front of Tanim Bhaban near Ansar Camp in Paikpara, Mirpur-1, under Mirpur Model Police Station.

A police team led by Officer-in-Charge Md Hafizur Rahman subsequently visited the spot and confirmed the information. The DMP’s Special Response Unit (SRU) was then informed.

According to the deputy commissioner, police recovered 15 crude bombs from three paper bags and five more from the roadside at around 1:45am.

They also recovered approximately two litres of kerosene in two bottles inside a shopping bag, 41 torch sticks and some collected pieces of foam board.

To ensure public safety, the 20 crude bombs were later taken to an open area inside the compound of an under-construction building of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works near Hakkani Goli in Kalyanpur.

The bombs were disposed of through two controlled explosions at around 2:20am on Thursday.

Legal proceedings in connection with the incident are underway, the police official said, adding that the law and order situation in the area remains normal.
