Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced plans to establish new industries in Mongla as part of the government’s target to transform Bangladesh into a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

He said the government was working to ensure a stable, secure and investment-friendly environment to attract domestic and foreign investors, while expanding industrialisation, infrastructure development and international economic cooperation.

The prime minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Invest Bangladesh and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) in Mongla, Bagerhat, at around 11:30am on Thursday (November 5).

He said creating new investment opportunities was essential to accelerating the country’s economic progress. The government would utilise Mongla’s geographical location, seaport and regional connectivity potential to establish industries in the area.

Such initiatives would increase domestic and foreign investment, generate employment and strengthen Mongla’s contribution to the national economy, he added.

In the presence of the prime minister, an MoU was signed to expand economic and infrastructure cooperation between Bangladesh and China.

Saleh Ahmed, member of Invest Bangladesh’s Industrial Zone Division, signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while Li Chongyang, chairman of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, signed on behalf of the Chinese side.

Under the MoU, opportunities will be created to expand investment and economic cooperation in infrastructure, transport, logistics, industry, energy, environment and skills development.

The agreement is expected to strengthen trade relations between the two countries and open new avenues for Chinese investment and technical cooperation in Bangladesh’s infrastructure development.

Officials concerned believe that implementing the proposed initiatives could contribute to industrialisation, improved connectivity and employment generation in Mongla and the southwestern region, particularly through the development of industries and logistics facilities centred on Mongla Port.
