Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has said the government has failed to maintain law and order, calling on Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed to resign, taking responsibility for the failure.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Dinajpur District Shilpakala Academy auditorium around 11am on Thursday (November 5), Nahid said the home minister had completely failed to perform his duties.

He alleged that incidents of murder, rape, snatching and other crimes had increased under the current government.

He said that during the interim government, the BNP had repeatedly claimed that law and order would improve once an elected government took office. However, the situation had deteriorated further, he added.

Nahid also alleged that freedom of expression and press freedom had been significantly curtailed in the country.

Referring to the gayebana janaza (absentee funeral prayer) for deceased worker Toufiq, Nahid alleged that police and other law enforcement personnel attacked the gathering and fired sound grenades.

He further alleged that the Awami League was trying to destabilise the country through violence, while the BNP was resorting to state repression. These two approaches were worsening the overall situation, he said.
