State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir has said the government will not issue an ordinary passport or travel pass to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to facilitate her return from India, as she is a fugitive and a death-row convict.
He made the remarks while speaking to the media on Thursday (November 5), after seeing off Liu Haixing, minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Humayun Kabir said Hasina would have to be brought back from New Delhi under the existing prisoner exchange agreement between Bangladesh and India.
The state minister also said a proposed trilateral corridor involving China, Bangladesh and Myanmar could transform the region into a major trade hub if implemented.
He said Dhaka was keen to join the proposed regional corridor, but a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis would be necessary before Bangladesh could become part of the initiative.
Humayun Kabir expressed hope that Liu Haixing’s visit would help further deepen and strengthen bilateral and strategic relations between Bangladesh and China in the coming days.
