Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in Barishal on Monday morning on a day-long official visit, his first to the region since assuming office.

He reached the Bhurghata area of Gournadi upazila in Barishal at around 9:30 am via the Dhaka–Kuakata Highway.

Upon entering Barishal district, the prime minister’s motorcade was formally welcomed by the local administration and BNP leaders and activists. Thousands of party supporters and residents lined both sides of the highway to greet him.

According to the itinerary, the prime minister will inaugurate a tree plantation programme along the newly excavated Sarikal Canal in Batajor Union of Gournadi upazila and attend a family card distribution programme in Batajor.

He will later take part in another tree plantation programme along the Sagardi Canal near the Trish Godown Memorial under the Barishal City Corporation.

After a break at the Circuit House in the afternoon, the prime minister is scheduled to attend an important organisational meeting at the Barishal Shilpakala Academy with leaders of the district and city BNP, as well as its associate and affiliated bodies.

He is expected to return to Dhaka by road later in the evening after completing the day’s programmes.

The visit has created a festive atmosphere across the southern region, with residents hoping for major announcements on several long-awaited infrastructure and development projects.
