Despite daylong protests on Tuesday demanding the postponement of the HSC examinations, the government has decided to proceed with today’s exams across the country, except in the flood-hit Chattogram region.
Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin announced on Facebook around 10:00pm that, after reviewing the overall situation, the government had decided to continue the HSC and equivalent examinations.
He said discussions were held earlier in the day with divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, police superintendents and chairpersons of all education boards.
The consensus was that all boards, except the Chattogram Education Board, have a suitable environment for holding the exams.
While acknowledging that even limited hardship for students is undesirable, he said authorities have been instructed to take effective measures to minimise inconvenience.
Although protesting students warned of a “Long March” to the Secretariat on Wednesday if the exams were not postponed, the government remains committed to holding the tests.
Cumilla Education Board Deputy Controller of Examinations Salahuddin said there was no valid reason to suspend Wednesday’s exams outside the Chattogram Board, noting that weather conditions had also improved.
On Wednesday, nine general education boards—excluding Chattogram—are scheduled to hold Physics, Accounting and Logic (Second Paper) examinations.
The Madrasah Education Board will also hold Alim Arabic Second Paper exams outside the five districts under Chattogram Division, while the Technical Education Board will conduct HSC (BM), Vocational and Diploma in Commerce examinations as scheduled.
As of 11:00pm on Tuesday, the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee had issued no fresh directive regarding Wednesday’s exams.
However, it reaffirmed that HSC and equivalent examinations under the Chattogram Education Board would remain suspended through Thursday, July 16.
The committee said most examination centres in other education boards remain operational and that local administrations, law enforcement agencies and district authorities have confirmed that conditions are suitable for conducting the exams.
It added that deputy commissioners would be authorised to take immediate action if natural disasters seriously threaten student safety or disrupt examinations.
