The government has reversed an interim administration’s decision to observe National Youth Day on August 12, restoring November 1 as the official date for the annual celebration.
The decision was approved at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, according to a Cabinet Division statement.
The statement said National Youth Day will now be observed on November 1, as it had been before the interim government shifted the date to August 12 to coincide with International Youth Day.
The Cabinet decided to restore the previous date to ensure more effective celebrations, noting that August falls during the monsoon season, making it difficult to organise rallies, fairs and other outdoor events.
It said adverse weather conditions often hamper youth fairs, limiting opportunities for young entrepreneurs to showcase their innovations and market their products while reducing public participation and commercial success.
“Unless youth fairs are organised on a day other than National Youth Day, the desired public engagement and commercial outcomes cannot be achieved,” the statement said.
Officials said National Youth Day celebrations are funded by the government, while International Youth Day is generally observed on August 12 with support from government agencies, non-governmental organisations and development partners.
The Cabinet also approved a proposal to observe International Youth Day on August 12 and National Youth Day on November 1 separately every year.
