A court in Chuadanga has sentenced a man to death for the rape and killing of a 10-year-old girl, in a case that has drawn widespread outrage.

The verdict was delivered Monday noon by Judge Md Moktagir Alam of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. The sole accused, Abul Hossain, also known as Fatik, was fined Tk 200,000 in addition to the death sentence.

According to court documents, the incident took place on December 21, 2023, in Jibannagar upazila ground field.

The victim, a third-grade student, had gone out with others children to collect leafy vegetables when the accused lured her into a room under the pretext of helping her. He then raped and fatally attacked her with a sharp weapon.

The girl’s father filed a case the following day against unidentified persons. Police later identified and arrested Abul Hossain, who confessed to the crime in court on March 7, 2024. In the last of inspection, a charge sheet was submitted on October 31 that year.

Prosecutors said the verdict was based on testimony from 31 witnesses, calling it a reflection of justice served.

However, defence lawyer Wahiduzzaman Mukul expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling and said they would appeal to a higher court.

Following the verdict, the convicted man—who worked as a van driver—was taken under police guard to Chuadanga District Jail.
