A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for strangling his wife over dowry demands in South Keraniganj in 2019, seven years ago.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict today (October 25) and fined the accused Tk1 lakh.
Md Ershad Alam (George), a state prosecutor involved in the case, confirmed the verdict.
The accused, Md Mizanur Rahman, also known as Mizan Hossain, was brought to court from jail for the verdict’s pronouncement. He was subsequently sent back to prison under a sentence warrant.
According to case documents, Mizanur married Mosammat Rehana under Islamic law, and the couple had two daughters.
After the marriage, Rehana’s family provided household items and gold ornaments as dowry. They also built a tin-roofed house at Mizanur’s residence.
Despite these provisions, Mizanur allegedly continued to abuse his wife over further dowry demands.
About 20 days before the murder, he demanded Tk50,000 from Rehana’s family. Her brother, Abbas, later sent Tk2,000 to Mizanur’s mobile phone through bKash. However, Mizanur allegedly beat Rehana despite receiving the money, according to the case documents.
On July 25, 2019, Rehana was strangled to death at a rented house in Char Mirerbagh under South Keraniganj Police Station before 7am.
After learning of her death, her brother travelled to Dhaka the following day and identified her body at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital. He later filed a case with South Keraniganj Police Station.
On December 29, 2019, investigating officer Sub-Inspector Md Akkas Mia submitted a charge sheet against Mizanur after completing the investigation.
The tribunal subsequently framed charges against him and ordered the trial to proceed.
During the proceedings, Mizanur voluntarily made a confessional statement, while the prosecution presented 10 witnesses before the court.
