The Election Commission (EC) has completed preparations to hold local government elections across the country in phases from October this year.
The schedule for the first phase of the elections may be announced by July or August, Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarker said on Wednesday.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the EC office in the afternoon.
The election commissioner said areas that have remained without elected representatives for a long time and whose legal terms have expired will be prioritised in the first phase of voting.
Considering the overall law and order situation at the local level, elections to Upazila Parishads and Union Parishads may be held simultaneously in convenient areas if necessary.
Regarding setting educational qualifications for candidates, he said no decision has been made yet. However, future steps will be taken after reviewing court directives and legal frameworks of neighbouring countries.
Meanwhile, the postal ballot facility for expatriate voters will not be available in local government elections for the time being.
