Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 446 people in a sweeping anti-crime drive carried out across the capital over the past 24 hours, officials said on Thursday.
During the operation, law enforcers also filed 56 cases related to various criminal activities, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehedi.
He said the operation targeted crime-prone areas under different police stations, aiming to curb drug trafficking, theft, and other offences. Many of those detained were arrested on charges involving narcotics and other crimes.
According to police data, Wari Division recorded the highest number of arrests with 104 detainees. It was followed by Mirpur Division with 83, Tejgaon with 74, Motijheel with 49, Lalbagh and Gulshan with 38 each, Uttara with 35, Ramna with 21, and the Detective Branch with 4 arrests.
During the drive, police also recovered a foreign-made pistol with a magazine, 3,755 yaba tablets, 9.005 kilograms of cannabis, and 7 grams of heroin. In addition, a microbus, a cutter, a knife, five mobile phones, and a motorcycle were seized. One victim was also rescued during the operation.
DMP officials said legal proceedings against the arrested individuals are currently underway, adding that such drives will continue as part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in the capital.
