Argentina are reportedly planning a special farewell match for Lionel Messi as the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner prepares to bring the curtain down on his illustrious international career following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Although many expected the 2026 tournament to mark Messi’s final appearance for Argentina, the 39-year-old once again defied age with a remarkable campaign. He scored eight goals and provided four assists, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest scorer and leading Argentina to the World Cup final.

However, after Argentina’s heartbreaking defeat to Spain in the final, Messi declined to comment on his international future. While head coach Lionel Scaloni has insisted that the national team door remains open for the captain, Argentine media reports suggest Messi has no plans to play in another World Cup.

Instead, the reports say the veteran forward intends to remain with the national team for a few more months to help ease the transition to a new generation before officially retiring from international football.

According to beIN Sports, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) is planning a special tribute match to allow fans to celebrate one of the greatest footballers in history in an appropriate farewell.

Messi’s international career has been one of triumph, heartbreak and redemption. After years of criticism following a series of final defeats, he led Argentina into one of the most successful eras in the country’s football history.

Under his captaincy, Argentina won the 2021 Copa America, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and the 2024 Copa America. He also played a pivotal role in guiding the Albiceleste to the final of the 2026 World Cup.

Unlike many football legends whose international retirements are announced through a social media post or a brief press conference, Messi’s farewell is expected to be far more memorable.

If the plans go ahead, his final appearance in the famous sky-blue and white jersey will be marked by a special celebration, giving Argentine fans the chance to bid an emotional farewell to one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen.
