The investigation agency of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has submitted a report against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 10 others over the killing of Ekramul Haque in Cox’s Bazar.
According to prosecution sources, the report finds preliminary evidence suggesting the incident involved crimes against humanity. The inquiry report has been handed over to the prosecution, which will now review it before filing formal charges with the tribunal.
Following the submission of formal charges, the tribunal will decide whether to accept the charges and proceed with framing charges against the accused.
Investigators said evidence indicates the involvement of 11 individuals in the killing, recommending prosecution under charges of crimes against humanity.
Ekramul Haque was killed in 2018 during an anti-drug operation in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, in what authorities initially described as a “crossfire.” The incident sparked nationwide debate after an audio recording released by his family went viral, raising allegations of an extrajudicial killing.
After the July Uprising, the tribunal’s investigation agency reopened the case. The latest report marks a significant step toward legal proceedings, as authorities move to examine accountability in the high-profile killing.
