The investigation agency of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has submitted its investigation report against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 10 others over the alleged extrajudicial killing of Cox’s Bazar councillor Ekramul Haque in a reported “crossfire.”
The prosecution on Sunday (July 26) submitted the investigation report in the high-profile case to International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.
According to the report, investigators found prima facie evidence suggesting that those accused were involved in crimes against humanity in connection with Ekram’s killing.
The investigation report has been submitted to the prosecution, which will now review the findings before filing a formal charge sheet with the tribunal.
Following a hearing, the tribunal will decide whether to take cognisance of the charges and formally indict the accused.
Prosecution sources said the investigation identified 11 individuals allegedly linked to the killing and recommended that they be prosecuted for crimes against humanity.
Ekramul Haque, a councillor from Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, was killed in a reported anti-drug operation in 2018.
The incident sparked nationwide controversy after his family released an audio recording that they said captured the moments leading up to his death, fuelling allegations that the killing was an extrajudicial execution.
Following the July mass uprising, the ICT’s investigation agency reopened the case. The investigation has now concluded with the submission of the report naming Sheikh Hasina and 10 others.
