Savar: Acting President Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram paid solemn tribute to the martyrs of Bangladesh’s Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Sunday.
He arrived at the memorial at around 11:30 am and laid a wreath at the altar in honour of those who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War.
A smartly turned-out contingent from the Army, Navy and Air Force presented a guard of honour as part of the state ceremony. The Last Post was sounded and other official observances were held in memory of the fallen heroes.
After paying tribute, the acting president planted a tree within the memorial complex, signed the visitors’ book and spent some time touring the site.
Ahead of his visit, a large number of leaders and activists from the BNP and its affiliated organisations gathered at the memorial premises. A significant group, led by Dhaka North District Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Tamiz Uddin, was also present.
Supporters chanted slogans and lined both sides of the Dhaka–Aricha Highway to welcome the acting president.
Security was tightened in and around the National Martyrs’ Memorial for the visit, with law enforcement agencies deployed to ensure overall safety and maintain order.
