The High Court has issued a rule asking why the arbitrary and excessive service charges levied on customers by Mobile Financial Services (MFS) including bKash, Nagad, and Rocket should not be declared illegal, unconstitutional, and unlawful. Simultaneously, the court asked why a dedicated Mobile Financial Service law should not be enacted to ensure consumer protection and accountability in MFS operations.
On July 26, Sunday, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md. Rezaul Karim issued the rule following a primary hearing on a writ petition filed in the public interest.
Advocate Obaidullah Al Mamun Sakib represented the petition in court, having filed the writ himself. The rule highlighted the urgent need to ensure reasonable, fair, and affordable MFS service charges, particularly for the poor and unbanked population of the country. The High Court directed the respondents, including the Finance Secretary, Posts and Telecommunications Secretary, and the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, to reply to the rule within four weeks.
