The High Court has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday on a rule questioning the legality of allegedly arbitrary and excessive service charges imposed on customers by mobile financial service (MFS) providers bKash, Nagad and Rocket.

A High Court bench led by Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia fixed the date on Monday (November 2). Advocate Obaidullah Al Mamun Sakib represented the petitioner during the proceedings.

Earlier, the court issued a rule asking why the collection of excessive service charges by the three MFS providers should not be declared illegal, unconstitutional and contrary to law.

The court also wanted to know why a separate law should not be enacted to regulate MFS service charges and ensure customer protection and accountability.

The writ petition emphasised the need for reasonable, fair and affordable service charges, particularly for poor and unbanked people who rely heavily on mobile financial services.

The rule was issued by a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Md Rezaul Karim.

The finance secretary, posts and telecommunications secretary, Bangladesh Bank governor and other relevant authorities were asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.
