A fishing trawler carrying 14 fishermen sank in the rough waters of the Bay of Bengal amid inclement weather. All 14 fishermen aboard the trawler, named FB Barkat and based in Patharghata of Barguna, remain missing.
The accident occurred on Monday afternoon while the trawler was fishing about 50 kilometers east of Mahipur in Patuakhali.
Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Bangladesh Fishermen Trawler Owners Association, confirmed the incident.
He said the trawler, owned by Ashraf Company of Patharghata, sank under the force of massive waves while fishing in rough weather about 50 kilometers east of Mahipur on Monday afternoon.
Fishermen aboard nearby trawlers witnessed the vessel sinking but were unable to rescue the fishermen because of the extremely rough sea.
Later, when another trawler from Patharghata entered a network coverage area, its fishermen informed the trawler owners’ association by phone about the sinking.
The association subsequently sought assistance from the Coast Guard and Bangladesh Navy to rescue the 14 missing fishermen.
The FB Barkat had departed from Patharghata three days earlier for deep-sea fishing.
