Eight injured as bus overturns on Padma Bridge approach

Eight people were seriously injured after a passenger bus overturned on the approach road to the Padma Bridge at the Mawa end on Monday.

The New Green Line Express bus overturned while descending from the bridge towards Dhaka after the driver reportedly lost control.

Fire Service personnel rescued the injured passengers and took them to hospital.

The accident also disrupted traffic on the Dhaka-bound lane as the bus came to a halt across the road.

The injured were identified as Saifullah, 80, Md Lutfar, 63, Rebeka Khatun, 40, Nur Islam, 46, Rashida, 40, Fatema, 7, Saif, 23, and Arafat, 13.

Eyewitnesses said people rushed to the scene after hearing passengers’ screams. Firefighters later arrived and rescued the injured.

Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of Munshiganj Fire Service, said the bus was travelling from Magura to Dhaka when it reportedly lost control due to excessive speed, hit a roadside railing on the approach road and overturned.

Two rescue teams from the Srinagar Fire Station rushed to the scene and rescued the injured passengers. They were later taken to Srinagar Upazila Health Complex in a Fire Service ambulance.

Traffic returned to normal around 45 minutes after the overturned bus was removed from the road, Shafiqul Islam said.
