A 40-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a bus while two passenger buses were reportedly racing against each other in Dhaka’s Tikatuli area on Monday.
The deceased, Rina Rani Ghosh, was crossing the road beneath the Tikatuli foot overbridge after dropping her younger son off at school when the accident occurred at around 1:30pm.
According to police and family members, a Doel Paribahan bus struck her while competing with a Bandhan Paribahan bus, leaving her critically injured.
With the help of local residents, police rescued her and took her to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 4:00pm, where doctors declared her dead.
Sub-Inspector Abu Bakkar of Wari Police Station said police seized the Doel Paribahan bus and detained its driver in connection with the incident.
Rina lived with her family on KM Das Lane in Wari and worked as a domestic worker. Her husband, Biswajit Ghosh, works as a fish-cutting labourer.
The couple hailed from Ibrahim village in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria and had two sons.
