Strong chemical fumes are hampering firefighting efforts at a fire-hit factory of Essential Drugs Company Limited in Tongi, Gazipur, forcing firefighters to battle the blaze from outside the building.
Fire Service personnel are struggling to enter the building fully because of the intense chemical smell inside, according to sources at the Fire Service headquarters on Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters are preparing to enter the building wearing specialised protective gear to shield themselves from the chemical fumes.
The fire broke out at the factory’s chemical warehouse in the Cherag Ali area at around 10:15am on Wednesday.
A total of 23 Fire Service units are working to bring the blaze under control.
The fire has also caused severe traffic congestion in surrounding areas.
