A doctor went missing after being swept away by strong currents while bathing at the popular Sadapathor tourist destination in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet district on Thursday.

The incident occurred around 2:30 pm at the source of the Dhalai River.

The missing doctor has been identified as Dr. Subrata Saha Bikash, 34, son of Mihir Lal Saha of Ramgati upazila in Lakshmipur district.

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, Dr. Bikash had visited Sadapathor with companions and entered the river for a bath. At one stage, he was swept into deep water by the river’s strong current and disappeared. Local residents immediately attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful.

After receiving the information, divers from the Fire Service, officials of the upazila administration, members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police, and local volunteers launched a joint search and rescue operation.

As of the latest reports, an extensive search operation was continuing in the Dhalai River to locate the missing doctor.

The incident has caused concern among tourists visiting the scenic destination. Authorities have urged visitors to avoid entering the river until the rescue operation is completed and to exercise caution because of the strong currents.

Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Robin Mia said further details would be provided after the rescue operation concludes.

Earlier, on June 9, 2025, a tourist, Mehedi Hasan Imon, 16, drowned while bathing at the same location. He was a resident of the Laladighirpar area of Sylhet city.
