Bangladesh’s weather department has warned of thunderstorms, gusty winds and heavy rainfall across several parts of the country, with wind speeds of up to 60 km/h expected in some areas on Tuesday.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), temporary squalls accompanied by rain or thundershowers may affect Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet. Winds from the south or southeast could reach speeds of 45-60 km/h, prompting authorities to advise inland river ports in these regions to display Local Warning Signal No. 1.
In its 24-hour forecast beginning at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, the BMD said many places in the Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, as well as some areas of Rajshahi and Dhaka divisions, are likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds. Isolated areas may also receive moderately heavy to heavy rainfall.
The weather office said day and night temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged across the country.
In Dhaka, intermittent heavy rain since Tuesday morning has caused waterlogging on several roads, disrupting traffic and creating difficulties for office-goers and commuters.
The forecast for Dhaka and surrounding areas indicates partly to temporarily cloudy skies with occasional rain or thundershowers. South to southeasterly winds are expected to blow at 10-15 km/h, while temperatures may fall slightly.
At 6:00 am on Tuesday, the capital recorded a temperature of 28.1 degrees Celsius with humidity at 92 percent. The city received 27 millimetres of rainfall over the previous 24 hours, according to the BMD.
