The body of a tourist who went missing while bathing in the Dhalai River at the Bholaganj Sadapathor tourist destination in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet has been recovered.
The body was found floating in the river on Friday morning. Local residents spotted it and informed the police.
The deceased was identified as Subrata Bikash Saha, 33, son of Mihir Lal Saha from Ramgati upazila in Lakshmipur district. He was a physician by profession.
According to local sources, Subrata entered the Dhalai River with three friends at around 2:00 pm on Thursday at the river’s source point near the Sadapathor tourist spot. He was swept away by the strong current and went missing after sinking into deep water.
Immediately after the incident, divers from the Fire Service, along with officials from the upazila administration, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police and local residents, launched a joint rescue operation. Despite hours of searching, they failed to locate him. His body was recovered on Friday morning after it surfaced in the river.
Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Robin Mia said personnel from the local administration, Fire Service, BGB and police joined the rescue efforts as soon as the tourist went missing. He advised visitors who cannot swim to wear life jackets for their safety.
Officer-in-Charge of Companiganj Police Station Shafikur Rahman Khan said police responded immediately after receiving reports of the incident. The body was later recovered and taken to the police station to complete legal formalities.
The Bholaganj Sadapathor tourist destination has witnessed similar fatal accidents in the past. On June 9, 2025, Mehedi Hasan Imon, 16, son of Jamal Mia from Laladighirpar in Sylhet city, drowned while bathing in the Dhalai River.
Following a series of such incidents, local residents and concerned citizens have called for stronger safety measures and more effective warning systems to protect visitors at the popular tourist destination.
