Leader of the Opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said there can be no compromise on Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty, pledging that not “an inch” of the country’s territory would be allowed to be occupied.
Speaking at a views-exchange meeting with local journalists at the Netrokona Circuit House on Friday, Dr. Shafiqur said Bangladesh belongs to all its citizens and everyone has equal rights in the country.
“This country does not belong to any one individual. It belongs to all of us. Everyone has equal rights here. Not a single inch of the country’s land will be allowed to be occupied. There is no room for compromise when it comes to our independence and sovereignty,” he said.
The meeting was chaired by Maulana Sadeq Ahmad Haris, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Netrokona district unit.
Dr. Shafiqur said the level of development in Netrokona over the past 55 years had been unsatisfactory, adding that the district still has considerable potential for further development.
He also stressed that protecting the country’s security and sovereignty is the responsibility of every citizen and called for a united effort to build a drug-free society.
“There is no alternative to national unity for the sake of the country,” he said.
