State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit on Friday said the government will reduce fuel prices gradually whenever global market conditions allow, following its recent decision to lower the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
“The price of fuel will be reduced step by step whenever there is an opportunity to do so. The government has reduced LPG cylinder prices in line with the global market,” he told reporters after a views-exchange meeting with officials of the Palli Bidyut Samity at the district circuit house in Jashore.
The state minister said Bangladesh imports about 98 percent of its LPG requirements and that the sector is almost entirely dependent on private operators.
Responding to questions about alleged inflated electricity bills and load shedding, Amit said the Power Division is working to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the ongoing summer season.
He said complaint centres have been established at every electricity office to address consumer grievances.
“I have instructed officials to respond promptly to complaints, as reports of irregular electricity bills have been received from several areas,” he said, urging power sector officials to be more committed to public service.
The minister also referred to the government’s nationwide tree plantation campaign, saying it is being implemented in line with the pledge of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to plant 250 million trees over five years. He said schools and both public and private institutions are taking part in the programme.
Among those present at the programme were Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashek Hasan, Superintendent of Police Syed Rafiqul Islam, District BNP President Saberul Haque Sabu, District Council Administrator Delwar Hossain Khokon, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Shahriar Haque and other officials.
