The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday expressed concern over recent media reports regarding research budget allocations for public universities, saying the reports were based on incomplete information and could create confusion among teachers, researchers and students.
In a statement, the UGC said the reports failed to present the overall picture of research funding for public universities and clarified that a total of Tk 226 crore has been allocated for research in the 2026-27 fiscal year.
According to the commission, the allocation represents an increase of nearly 13% compared to the previous fiscal year’s research budget.
The UGC rejected reports suggesting that no funds had been earmarked for research activities at public universities, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading.
“The reports claiming that no allocation has been made for research are incorrect,” the statement said.
The commission explained that the research financing mechanism has been restructured in line with government policy to make the allocation process more streamlined, transparent and research-friendly.
The revised system is also intended to prevent duplication of research projects and ensure more effective use of public funds.
The UGC further said it would release research funds to public universities as soon as it receives the required funding proposals and requests from the institutions.
The commission reiterated its commitment to supporting research and innovation at public universities and urged all stakeholders to rely on verified information regarding budget allocations and research financing policies.
