Two young men were allegedly beaten and tortured after being suspected of theft in Joypurhat’s Khetlal upazila, leaving one dead and the other injured.

The deceased was identified as 18-year-old Lal Badsha, son of Jamal of Alampur Nalpukur Adarsha village in Alampur union. His friend, 18-year-old Maidul, son of Ibrahim of the same area, was rescued alive.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday night in the Mahabbatpur Padmapukur area of Mamudpur union.

According to police and local residents, locals spotted the two youths lying in the area on Saturday morning and informed police. Khetlal police later recovered Lal Badsha dead and Maidul alive. Maidul was taken to Khetlal Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment.

Maidul told police that several people called them from near a petrol pump in the Jamalganj Charmatha area and took them to a house. He alleged that they were beaten and tortured there before being abandoned beside a field. He said he would be able to identify the attackers if he saw them again, but he could not provide their names or addresses.

Patu, general secretary of the Alampur union unit of the BNP, said Lal Badsha had a physical disability and poor eyesight, while Maidul also had some cognitive difficulties.

Police said their preliminary assessment suggests the two may have been beaten after being suspected of theft and later left beside the field. Lal Badsha died there, while Maidul was found unconscious.
