International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam has said that Bangladesh has completed the necessary legal procedures to seek the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. How India chooses to send her back to Bangladesh—whether through a court order or a government decision—is entirely a matter for the Indian authorities.
He made the remarks on Sunday at the Chief Prosecutor’s office at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), responding to a report by The Indian Express stating that Indian court approval would be required to extradite Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.
The Chief Prosecutor said several cases against Sheikh Hasina are currently pending in Bangladesh, and she has already been convicted in one of them. He also noted that Sheikh Hasina herself has said that she would return to Bangladesh in December. However, Bangladesh expects her to be sent back before then.
Regarding the Indian Express report about the need for approval from an Indian court, Aminul Islam said there was little more Bangladesh could say on the matter.
He said Bangladesh was not aware of whether Sheikh Hasina had sought political asylum through the Indian courts. Therefore, he added, it was difficult for Bangladesh to comment on the issue based solely on reports in the Indian media.
“We can only state our position: Sheikh Hasina has been convicted by a court in Bangladesh. Therefore, she must return to Bangladesh,” the Chief Prosecutor said.
