The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has warned taxpayers about a fraud ring that is attempting to extort money by falsely claiming their tax files have been selected for audit.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the NBR said that fraudsters have recently been contacting taxpayers from various mobile phone numbers, claiming their tax records are under audit.
They allegedly promise exemption from the audit or threaten legal consequences in an attempt to illegally collect money.
The NBR clarified that its officials never contact taxpayers regarding tax audits through personal mobile numbers or unauthorized channels.
If a taxpayer’s file is selected for audit, they are notified only through an official written notice in accordance with the law.
The revenue authority also stressed that all outstanding taxes and fees must be paid only to the state treasury through official government payment channels.
No NBR official is authorized to receive payments personally or through mobile financial services such as bKash, Rocket, Nagad, or personal bank accounts.
Taxpayers have been advised not to be misled by suspicious phone calls, SMS messages, or emails. Instead, they should verify such claims by contacting the office of the relevant Deputy Commissioner of Taxes.
The NBR further urged anyone who receives a demand for money from someone claiming to be an NBR official to immediately inform law enforcement authorities and preserve the caller’s phone number as evidence.
Reaffirming its commitment to providing transparent and harassment-free taxpayer services, the NBR urged taxpayers not to make any financial transactions in response to threats or false promises made by fraudsters.
