Seven more children died with measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours to 8am Monday, raising Bangladesh’s combined confirmed and suspected measles-related death toll to 915 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The DGHS classified all seven latest deaths as suspected measles fatalities, taking the total number of suspected deaths to 816. Confirmed measles deaths remain at 99.
The country recorded 981 new suspected measles cases during the 24-hour period, bringing the cumulative number to 143,778. Another 50 laboratory-confirmed cases were also reported, raising the total number of confirmed infections to 17,930.
Since March 15, a total of 125,386 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalised nationwide, according to DGHS data. Of them, 120,913 have recovered.
The latest figures underscore the continuing severity of the measles outbreak, with more than 1,000 new suspected and confirmed cases reported in the latest 24-hour period.
